Race Report

The first day of summer? And a not-too-shabby ride from Chris Glasby and Michael Freiberg? They found a course record in everyway they were eligible. The conditions looked pretty good on the finish line but the 'out-and-back' times suggest that life on the road was a tad more testing on the homeward leg. Nevertheless just under half of the field came in at an average of better than 40km/h. Last man to do it was young Myles Allen who had to do the last bit on his own when his partner James' bike developed mechanical problems. Vying for the prize in the day's misfortune category was the venerable Terry Skinner who left some of his skin and an indeterminate amount of time back down the road but in proper 'Gents' tradition, led his 'young' partner, Guido, across the line.

Also in the 'Gents' tradition or what has become its tradition, we had a fairly wide sprinkling of partnerships: parents and offspring, sometimes the older and other times the younger rider showing the way; friends and people without friends (solo riders) and several who wanted to try it both ways! It makes for a bit of a nightmare in terms of management but someday we'll have it all under control; perhaps. And there were, obviously, some serious pairings—see the bunch where both riders achieved PBs. Overall there was quite a good sprinkling of PBs. Jorge Botello teamed with Matt Illingworth and achieved his best average speed over the 24 years he's ridden with ATTA. There's something special about the 'Gents'.

Alison Atherton jumped in to the job of 'manning' the desk today when, in desperation, we were putting out calls for assistance. Fortunately the WCMCC had a day off, otherwise Alison would have been doing the job for them. Frank Norton, forced out of a ride by injury, was there to assist for some of the time. Not far away, Colin Rose put in a solid day's work at the gate to the Community centre—tougher than a day on the bike he reckoned; but he did marshal riders for Lorraine, our starter (and wearer of other hats, of course) and call numbers as riders passed by on their sprint to the finish; as well as controlling traffic into and out from our parking lot. Down at the far end of Hopeland Road, Ross Clark had set up the intermediate timing loop and, together with Mark Taylor, controlled the turn-around. And Kumar dispensed coffee.

So, another season put to rest. Next week we start again: the road goes on…
