Race Report

200 rides for Peter Allen - that's about 1238km – a bit less as there were a couple of DNFs but he's averaged 27km/h with a best event speed of 34.4km/h. That was at a WheelChair Sports event a couple of years ago (we timed it), but just behind that one was his ride at Bibra Lake earlier this year: 34.0km/h. It's not time to retire yet, Pete! Apart from his own achievements, Pete has been the encouragement behind many more km from the other Hand-wheelies. Good man… And he should be impressed with his PB too; he didn't think he'd managed that – too busy complaining about the lumps and bumps in the road surface; you get that… he'll be back. Richard Williams was very happy with his 2min PB while Neil McDougall was unaware that he'd also gathered a PB - reckoned he's not done enough training; maybe doing a bit less has restored a balance?
'Happy Birthday!', Heiko.

Well, only momentary excitement experienced today as a firetruck and siren headed out towards Mundaring and the fire there; a burst water-main close to the main drag in Wooroloo gave some welcome reief to some riders on a day that was getting seriously warm, but that was offset by a few metres of gravel and corrugations just near the turn; nobody came unstuck; we had some warning. It was nice and calm at the beginning but out-and-back times show there was more than a bit of extra altitude gain on the way home - the finish flag confirmed this.

Stu Helm having partied yesterday with his just-turned-one-year-old, was on a mission – the first man home, a PB, his number one spot was never challenged; although Matt Chambers showed his recent impressive form once again; Tom Barratt did his best to talk down his prospects before the start but clearly remembers how to pump out a 40km/h average. Jonathan Lewis rode the course 5 years ago as a 14 year-old and given recent performances, we shoudn't have been too surprised by a significant improvement; TEN minutes is particularly so! Maybe it was the thought of young brother David only 3 minutes up the road. David got home safely but only by 22sec and he's been doing pretty well himself recently.

Stu Gee again claimed the biggest bucket of Standards points while Sofia had the measure of the other girls with Steff conceding about 3min. Pre-start talk suggested there might have been a few tired legs out there today after yesterdays efforts in the heat.

The desk was again managed by Carolyn Equid, today with the help of Sally Churchil while across the road, on the roundabout, Steve McGee and Young Freddy Cottier monitored rider progress; down at Wundowie, Kim Van A and Adam Scott managed the turn and collected turn times. Lorraine had been your starter and Troy had orgaised the course set-up before going out on a reconnoitre of the Kep track on his 29-er.
