Race Report

The only problem with today's ride conditions might have been the traffic density on Toodyay Road; otherwise everything looked pretty much ready for some great results. Stuart Murray was celebrating his 100th ATTA ride but it was marred a tad by an unshipping chain. Neil McDougall had a similar problem but he only got to the first hill and also managed to offset the cranks on his hand-cycle: time to head back!

We missed a couple of intermediate times: Richard Williams had an early start (too early for the crew at the timing point to get the loop in place but – only just) and DavidE went for the lightweight-on-hillies approach and left his transponder on his TT bike (at home). It worked: he claimed a PB! Mick Brammer reckons the hardest thing about this event is the equipment choice: that's from the man who first rode the course on his 'fixie' expecting one of the more 'gently undulating' variety of Hilly. Today he had his road bike and GEARS; and he also did a PB. But leader again on the PB list was Steff vanA. What a pity the women's cohort had been reduced by more than 2/3 by the time they lined up at the start – Steff's recent performances have earned her considerable bragging rights and really deserve a big audience.

Today's helper crew all gained top points on their assessment and Jeff, who had assembled them, was able to go out a ride with a clear conscience, finishing with a very nice 2min PB. Jarred Anderson, having put in some superb efforts on the bike this season (particularly the 160km championship), scored maximum points on the Reserve/Breeze Road junction; Wendy and Gregor on 'turn 2' also scored maximally as did Charlie Hodgson at the turn back onto Toodyay Road. There's no need to say that Troy did a great job setting up the course – of course he did. And Sally Churchill managed the desk; flawlessly (no surprise there, either). Thank you all!

So that's all for another Hilly series; and only two more rides for the Summer season. Oh dear …
