Race Report

On any other day down at Serpentine 15º would be pretty cool but today there was no wind; it was quite a magical morning with the early fog lifting as the sun rose.

It's a pity there weren't more to share the magic. Today the number starting was about equivalent to those who actually finished the last time we rode at Serpentine–when half the field DNF'd because the event was forcibly abandoned–the result of a police car-chase closing the road. This time a few riders added some extra excitement for themselves, going sightseeing after missing the turn off Rapids Road. We had mentioned in 'the email' that this corner would not be marshalled; not enough volunteers … Nevertheless Kumar was able to dispense coffee to some grateful post-ride customers so he wasn't left wondering what was the point of coming down to Hopeland.

And Scotty and John Graham, sons of Janice, the fastest girl on the course today, were there to man the desk; John Andrews and Craig Beeching manned the 'Give Way' corner just after the start; Sašia Taylor, the turn INTO Rapids Road and Lorraine, the start once again. Troy set up and took down the course and pedalled a couple of fast laps in between. Well done and thanks, all of you.

It was good to see Chris Roberts back on his TT bike and collecting a PB as the result of negatively splitting his four laps of the 40km option. Chris was one of a few wanting early starts so they could go on to ride the WCMCC event after a good warm-up. Perhaps this peeved Phil Gyford a little as he had to sacrifice his customary Bib#1. But equally likely, it might have been the motivation for the PB he found out there. Well done, Phil!
Allister Caird emulated Chris Froome's ride this week in La Vuelta: last man to start the day, taking fastest-time honours after a number of others had warmed the 'hot-seat' for him.

And John Sonego celebrated his 150th ATTA ride.
