Race Report

The conditions looked pretty ordinary before the start and almost half the field had decided they weren't going to bother testing them anyway; or themselves. Even Chris Roberts asked "what am I doing here?" when he arrived.
You're here BECAUSE IT'S YOUR 250th RIDE WITH US, CHRIS!

SO he got out there and did it despite crap weather, buffeting winds and roadwork trenches across Bailup Road. There actually wasn't much comment about the trenches when riders returned - more about the 'block headwind' down Toodyay Rd and the unpredictable but definitely unhelpful wind blowing down (up? across?) Old Northam Road. Even Luke was a tad uncertain of the best way to handle that first stretch; it probably lost him three minutes we calculated; he agreed. Anyway, being twenty nine seconds short of his record was not too surprising. Nevertheless, a handful of the handful that rode returned with personal bests.

Tom McCracken was first man home, with a PB, in a time that wasn't bettered until Luke arrived back. A few minutes after Tom, Steff flew up the Lilydale home straight to grab the fastest women's time - that she kept; another PB. A few more finishers and Colin Rose was back to collect the best allocation of Hilly 'Standards Points' for the morning and keep that young fellow Sonego in his place: #2, although, with a PB!

We had our friends from WARP look after the tricky turn into Toodyay Rd but Craig Beeching was reponsible for most of the course set-up, did the timing at 20km and rescued Sean Ralph when he crashed going into Toodyay Rd; Lorraine McLennan looked after the desk while Ian McLennan managed the turn into Bailup Road; Dale Groves pointed riders back up Lilydale Rd to the finish whereas Lorraine had managed the start and the inevitable game of 'musical chairs' that occurs when you have a sadly fragmentary start list. Thanks, each of you.
